Be prepared for a power cut

Riverside news News article

Power cuts can happen unexpectedly, especially during periods of severe weather. Knowing what to do before, during and after a power cut can help keep you and your household safe.

Report a power cut

If you experience a power cut or spot damaged electricity equipment, call SP Energy Networks on 105.

The 105 number is free to call from a landline or mobile phone, no matter who supplies your electricity.

Save 105 somewhere easy to find so it is available when you need it.

How to prepare for a power cut

There are some simple steps you can take now to help you cope if the power goes out:

  • Keep the 105 number handy.
  • Keep a torch and spare batteries in an easy-to-find place.
  • Make sure your mobile phone is charged whenever possible.
  • Have warm clothing and blankets available.
  • Fill a flask with hot water if severe weather is forecast.
  • Make sure you have food that doesn’t require heating in the house.
  • Keep a battery-powered radio for news and updates if other communications are affected.

If you use medical equipment at home

If you or someone in your household relies on medical equipment that requires electricity, it is important to plan ahead.

  • Check that any backup systems are working properly.
  • Make sure batteries will last for at least three hours.
  • Speak to your healthcare provider if you are concerned about how a power cut could affect your equipment or care needs.
