Ending your tenancy

If you are leaving the property for any reason, you must tell us in writing immediately.

Giving notice

Your Scottish Secure Tenancy Agreement requires you to give at least 28 days’ written notice to end your tenancy. This helps us prepare the property and offer it to someone on our waiting list. 

What happens next?
  • We’ll confirm receipt of your notice within one working day.
  • We’ll then write to you to confirm your official tenancy end date. 
Property inspection
Before you leave, we’ll arrange an inspection of your home. During this visit, we’ll let you know:
  • Any repairs you need to complete
  • Any cleaning or decoration required before you move out
If repairs are left outstanding, you may be charged for the cost of putting them right.

Within five working days, we’ll confirm these details in writing and let you know if there is any rent still to pay.
Returning your keys
You must return all keys to your local office by your tenancy end date.
  • Wherever possible, return them in person
  • We’ll give you a receipt as proof of return

Moving home

Have you let everyone know you are moving?

Moving house is a busy time. Here are some people you may need to tell that you are moving out:

  • If you receive Housing Benefit or Universal Credit, let them know about the change
  • Tell the gas, electric, water, and phone companies
  • Tell us who supplies your gas and electric so we can let the new tenant know
  • Ask Royal Mail to forward post to your new address (there is a fee for this service)
Moving checklist

Tick off these tasks before you leave:

  • Notify Housing Benefit or Universal Credit
  • Contact gas, electric, water, and phone providers
  • Give us details of your gas and electric suppliers
  • Arrange Royal Mail post forwarding
  • Cancel or update any subscriptions
  • Update your address with your bank and employer
  • Inform your GP and dentist
  • Update your driving licence and car insurance
  • Redirect deliveries or online orders

Ready to complete your notice?

Make sure you’ve checked your rent, repairs and notified everyone before submitting your notice. Notice must be given in writing and signed by the tenant(s).
